Abra was founded in 2014 by Bill Barhydt, a former Netscape director and Goldman Sachs analyst, initially as a mobile-first app for buying, selling, storing, and lending cryptocurrency. Over time the company expanded from a simple consumer wallet into a broader digital-asset financial services platform, adding features such as crypto-collateralized lending, yield and staking products, and index-style tokens that track baskets of major cryptocurrencies. Abra has raised roughly $104 million in venture funding from investors including First Round Capital and RRE Ventures, and has operated in more than 150 countries, competing with other retail crypto platforms such as Coinbase, Kraken, and Nexo. More recently, Abra has shifted its emphasis toward institutional and high-net-worth clients, launching Abra Capital Management to offer structured investment funds, and building out prime brokerage-style services covering trading, hedging, lending, treasury management, and liquidity for hedge funds, family offices, and venture capital firms. This pivot came alongside regulatory challenges: in 2024 Abra settled with roughly two dozen U.S. state financial regulators over allegations that it had operated its lending and trading products without proper state licenses, a settlement that required it to wind down certain retail lending activities in the U.S. Around the same period, the company acquired several private cryptocurrency trusts, including Tron and Zilliqa vehicles, from Valkyrie Investments, continuing its build-out of institutional-style asset management products even as it navigated the tightening U.S. regulatory environment for crypto lending and custody businesses.
