Alation was founded in 2012 by Satyen Sangani, drawing on his prior experience at Oracle overseeing data and analytics products, alongside the observation that as companies accumulated more data across more systems, the harder problem often wasn't a lack of data but a lack of trustworthy, discoverable metadata about what that data meant, where it came from, and whether it could be relied upon for a given business decision. Alation's flagship product, generally credited as one of the earliest modern data catalog platforms, indexes an organization's databases, business intelligence tools, and other data sources, automatically surfacing metadata such as table and column definitions, usage patterns, and data lineage, while also incorporating crowdsourced, Wikipedia-style human annotation from data analysts and stewards on top of that automated metadata. The company has since broadened its positioning from a narrower data catalog into a wider data intelligence platform spanning data governance, data quality monitoring, and increasingly AI governance, as enterprises have needed to track not just where their data lives but how it's being used to train or ground AI models and whether that usage complies with internal policy and external regulation. Alation's customers span large regulated industries including financial services, healthcare, and government, where data lineage and governance carry particular compliance weight, and its product often sits alongside broader modern data stack tools from vendors like Snowflake and Databricks. The company has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Sapphire Ventures, Costanoa Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures, reaching unicorn status, and competes with data catalog and governance vendors including Collibra and increasingly with governance features built natively into large cloud data platforms.
