Alpaca was founded in 2015 by Yoshi Yokokawa, along with co-founders with backgrounds in trading technology, based on the idea that building a fully licensed, compliant brokerage from scratch was a major barrier for fintech companies, robo-advisors, and other businesses that wanted to offer investing features to their users but did not want to become a broker-dealer themselves. Rather than building a consumer-facing trading app as its primary product, Alpaca operates as brokerage infrastructure: it holds the necessary regulatory licenses and clearing relationships and exposes trading, account management, and market data functionality through a developer-friendly API, letting other companies embed stock and, later, cryptocurrency trading directly into their own applications under their own brand. This brokerage-as-a-service or embedded-finance model has made Alpaca a common backend for algorithmic trading tools, robo-advisory platforms, neobanks, and international fintech companies looking to offer U.S. equities trading to customers outside the United States, without each of those companies needing to independently become a registered broker-dealer or build direct exchange connectivity. Alpaca's API supports both commission-free trading for retail-style order flow and more advanced functionality aimed at algorithmic and programmatic traders, including fractional shares and paper-trading environments for testing strategies before deploying real capital. The company has expanded beyond the U.S. into markets such as Japan and the U.K. through local licensing and partnerships, and has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Tribe Capital, Spark Capital, and Y Combinator, competing with other embedded brokerage and trading-infrastructure providers such as DriveWealth and Apex Fintech Solutions in the growing market for white-label investing products.
