Ambience Healthcare was founded in 2020 by Mike Ng and Nikhil Buduma, engineers with backgrounds in machine learning, who set out to address the same clinician documentation burden that has become one of the most active areas of health AI investment: physicians spending large amounts of after-hours time, sometimes called "pajama time," typing up notes from the day's patient visits instead of spending that time with family or recovering from a demanding job. Like other ambient scribe products, Ambience's core technology listens to a patient encounter, either in person or via telehealth, and automatically drafts a structured clinical note in the physician's own style and the appropriate format for the visit type and specialty. Ambience has differentiated itself partly by building specialty-specific AI models tuned to the particular terminology, documentation requirements, and billing codes used in fields such as emergency medicine, orthopedics, and primary care, rather than relying on a single general-purpose model across all specialties, and by extending beyond note generation into automated medical coding, a related but distinct task that has historically required specialized human coders to translate clinical documentation into the billing codes insurers require. The company has partnered with large health systems, including academic medical centers, to deploy its technology at scale, and has emphasized clinical accuracy and integration with electronic health record systems like Epic as key differentiators in a crowded and fast-growing ambient documentation market that includes Abridge, Nuance's DAX product from Microsoft, and Suki. Ambience has raised substantial venture funding from investors including OpenAI's startup fund, Kleiner Perkins, and Andreessen Horowitz, reaching a valuation in the billions of dollars as health systems have rapidly adopted ambient AI scribes following years of clinician burnout concerns.
