AngelList was founded in 2010 by Naval Ravikant and Babak Nivi, originally as a platform to connect startups seeking funding with angel investors, essentially digitizing and opening up a fundraising process that had historically depended heavily on personal networks and in-person introductions within a small number of hub cities like Silicon Valley and New York. Over time, AngelList evolved well beyond a matchmaking site into a much broader piece of financial infrastructure for the venture capital industry, building products that handle the significant administrative and legal complexity involved in running investment vehicles. Its most consequential product line is AngelList's rolling fund and special purpose vehicle (SPV) infrastructure, which lets individual investors and smaller fund managers, sometimes called "solo capitalists" or micro-VCs, raise and manage venture capital funds without needing to build out the back-office legal, accounting, and compliance functions traditionally required to run a fund, dramatically lowering the barrier to becoming an institutional-style venture investor. AngelList also offers AngelList Talent, a jobs marketplace connecting startups with candidates, and various tools for cap table management and startup equity administration through its acquisitions and integrations. By handling fund formation, capital calls, K-1 tax reporting, and other back-office functions, AngelList has enabled a significant expansion in the number of active venture investors and micro-funds over the past decade, alongside traditional venture firms. The company has raised venture funding of its own from investors including Chris Sacca's fund Lowercase Capital, and has continued to expand its suite of financial infrastructure products for both fund managers and the startups that raise capital through its platform.
