Apollo.io was founded in 2015, initially operating under a different name before rebranding, by Tim Zheng, with the goal of combining two functions that sales teams had typically bought as separate products: a large database of business contact and company information used to identify potential customers, and an engagement platform used to actually reach out to those contacts through email sequences, calls, and other outbound channels. By combining data and engagement into a single platform, Apollo aimed to reduce the friction and cost involved in stitching together separate prospecting databases like ZoomInfo with separate sales engagement tools like Outreach or Salesloft. Apollo's database includes contact and firmographic information intended to help sales development representatives identify accounts and individuals matching a company's ideal customer profile, along with intent signals suggesting which accounts might be more likely to be in a buying window, while its engagement layer provides sequence-building tools, a dialer, email tracking, and AI-assisted messaging suggestions. The company has positioned itself with a particularly aggressive pricing strategy relative to some established sales intelligence incumbents, targeting small and mid-sized businesses and sales teams with a self-serve, credit-based pricing model in addition to larger enterprise contracts, which has helped it build a very large user base relatively quickly. Apollo has increasingly layered generative AI features into its platform, including AI-written outreach messaging and conversational assistants for sales reps, and has expanded into broader go-to-market and revenue intelligence use cases beyond its original prospecting-and-outreach core. The company has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Sequoia Capital and Tribe Capital, reaching a valuation in the billions of dollars, competing with ZoomInfo, Outreach, Salesloft, and 6sense in the broader sales intelligence and engagement category.
