Articulate was founded in 2002 by Adam Schwartz and Gabe Anderson, initially building a PowerPoint add-in that let corporate trainers and instructional designers convert existing PowerPoint presentations into interactive, web-based e-learning courses, at a time when creating professional-looking online training content typically required either expensive specialized authoring software or significant custom development work. Over time Articulate expanded this into a much broader suite of authoring tools, culminating in its flagship product line, Articulate 360, a subscription bundle including Storyline, a more advanced course-building tool supporting complex interactions, branching scenarios, and quizzes, and Rise, a simpler, template-based, mobile-responsive course builder aimed at users who want a faster, more streamlined authoring experience without deep instructional design expertise. Articulate's customer base spans corporate learning and development teams, who use its tools to build compliance training, onboarding materials, and professional development courses, as well as independent instructional designers and consultants who build courses for multiple client organizations. The company built and maintained a well-known online community in the e-learning industry, the "E-Learning Heroes" community, which has served both as a support resource and as a source of user-generated templates, examples, and best practices that reinforced Articulate's position as a default choice for e-learning authoring among instructional design professionals. Articulate has operated largely as a profitable, founder-led company relative to many venture-backed SaaS peers, expanding its product line over time to include AI-assisted course creation tools as generative AI has begun to reshape content creation workflows across many software categories. The company competes with other e-learning authoring tools such as Adobe Captivate, iSpring, and Lectora, as well as broader learning management system vendors that have added their own course-authoring capabilities.
