Automattic was founded in 2005 by Matt Mullenweg, one of the original developers of the open-source WordPress content management system, with the mission of commercializing hosted and value-added services around WordPress while continuing to support and steward the underlying open-source project, which has grown to power a very large share of all websites globally, from personal blogs to major media outlets and e-commerce sites. Automattic's flagship commercial product, WordPress.com, provides fully hosted, managed WordPress websites for individuals and businesses that don't want to handle their own server infrastructure, security patching, and technical maintenance, monetizing through subscription plans that add features like custom domains, e-commerce capabilities, and premium themes on top of the free, open-source WordPress software anyone can otherwise self-host. Beyond WordPress.com, Automattic owns and operates a range of other web publishing and communication products, including Tumblr, the microblogging and social networking platform it acquired from Yahoo in 2019; WooCommerce, a widely used open-source e-commerce plugin for WordPress; Jetpack, a security and performance plugin suite for self-hosted WordPress sites; and Day One, a popular personal journaling app. The company has operated as a fully distributed, remote-first workforce since its founding, well before remote work became mainstream, and has structured a portion of its business, including through the WordPress Foundation, to support the broader open-source WordPress ecosystem rather than purely maximizing Automattic's own commercial interests. Automattic has periodically been involved in public disputes over trademark and infrastructure control within the WordPress ecosystem, including a widely covered 2024 conflict with hosting competitor WP Engine over WordPress trademark licensing. The company has raised private funding from investors including Insight Partners and Salesforce Ventures at a valuation exceeding $7 billion.
