Autonomy was founded around 2021 by Scott Painter, the entrepreneur behind earlier automotive companies including CarsDirect, TrueCar, and the vehicle leasing startup Fair, together with co-founder Georg Bauer, building on lessons from those prior ventures to launch a subscription model specifically for electric vehicles. Rather than requiring customers to commit to a traditional multi-year lease or auto loan, Autonomy lets subscribers pay a flat monthly fee that bundles the vehicle, insurance, and maintenance, with the ability to swap vehicles or cancel on relatively short notice, aiming to lower the psychological and financial barrier to trying an EV for consumers uncertain about range, charging, or long-term ownership costs. Autonomy initially placed an ambitious order for tens of thousands of electric vehicles across multiple automakers, worth over a billion dollars, intending to build a large owned fleet that it could offer flexibly across U.S. markets, but the company's growth plans were significantly disrupted starting in 2023 when Tesla's aggressive price cuts sharply reduced the resale and residual value of the largely Tesla-heavy fleet Autonomy had already acquired, forcing Painter to personally inject capital, including proceeds from selling a personal residence, to keep the company afloat. In response, Painter spun out a related company, Autonomy Data Services (ADS), to license Autonomy's underlying subscription software and data platform to automakers and dealers wanting to run their own vehicle subscription programs, diversifying the business beyond directly owning and renting out its own fleet. Autonomy has continued to expand its EV subscription offering across several U.S. states, adding vehicles from additional automakers including Volvo and Polestar alongside Tesla, and has partnered with large dealer groups such as AutoNation and Galpin to handle vehicle logistics and retail operations.
