Brightseed was founded in 2017 by Jim Flatt and Sonia Iyer, based on the observation that plants contain an enormous, largely uncharacterized universe of bioactive chemical compounds, sometimes called phytochemicals, many of which likely have meaningful effects on human health but have never been systematically identified, characterized, or connected to specific biological mechanisms, in part because traditional methods of natural compound discovery are slow, labor-intensive, and have historically focused on only a small, well-studied subset of known plant chemistry. The company built an AI platform, called Forager, that analyzes plant chemical composition data alongside biological and health outcome data to identify candidate bioactive compounds and predict their likely biological mechanisms and health effects far more quickly than traditional laboratory-based discovery methods would allow. Brightseed has applied this discovery platform to identify specific compounds with potential applications across areas such as metabolic health, gut health, and healthy aging, then works to validate these compounds through further laboratory and clinical research before developing them into ingredients that can be licensed to food, beverage, dietary supplement, and pharmaceutical companies for use in their own products. One of the company's most prominent discoveries, a compound called dihydroberberine derived from Indian barberry root, has been developed into a commercial ingredient marketed for metabolic health applications, illustrating the company's model of using AI-driven discovery to identify a promising natural compound and then partnering with other companies to bring it to market in consumer or pharmaceutical products rather than manufacturing and marketing end products itself. Brightseed has positioned its approach as significantly accelerating a category of natural product discovery that has historically moved very slowly, and has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Danone Manifesto Ventures and Viking Global Investors, reflecting interest from both strategic food and beverage companies and financial investors in AI-accelerated natural ingredient discovery.
