C2FO was founded in 2008 by Sandy Kemper, building a marketplace model around a specific and widespread business finance problem: suppliers, particularly small and mid-sized businesses, often have to wait 30, 60, or even 90 days or longer to get paid on invoices they've issued to larger corporate customers, creating cash flow strain, while those same large corporate buyers often have significant excess cash sitting in low-yield accounts that could otherwise be productively deployed. C2FO's platform, whose name stands for "Collaborative Cash Flow Optimization," creates a marketplace where suppliers can offer to accept early payment on an invoice in exchange for a small discount off the invoice's face value, letting the corporate buyer effectively earn a return by paying early at a discount, while the supplier gets access to needed cash faster than waiting for the invoice's original due date. This dynamic discounting model differs from traditional invoice factoring or supply chain financing, which typically involves a third-party financial institution providing the capital and taking on credit risk in exchange for fees or interest; in C2FO's marketplace, the corporate buyer itself is often effectively providing the early payment capital using its own cash, at rates the supplier and buyer essentially negotiate through the platform's bidding mechanism, which the company argues can be more favorable for both parties than traditional third-party financing options. C2FO has built relationships with a large number of major global corporations as buyers on its platform, giving their supplier networks, often including many thousands of small and mid-sized vendors, access to this early payment option. The company has processed very large cumulative transaction volumes since its founding and has raised substantial venture funding from investors including SoftBank Vision Fund, Temasek, and Union Square Ventures, reaching unicorn status, positioning itself as significant infrastructure for global supply chain and working capital finance.
