Calendly was founded in 2013 by Tope Awotona, who built the product to solve a problem he experienced firsthand: the tedious back-and-forth of email exchanges typically required to find a mutually convenient meeting time between two or more people, especially across different time zones or busy calendars. Calendly's core product lets users connect their calendar (such as Google Calendar, Outlook, or Office 365) and generate a personalized scheduling link that reflects their real, up-to-date availability; anyone with the link can then simply pick an open time slot and book a meeting directly, which automatically appears on the calendar owner's calendar without any further back-and-forth communication needed. The product's simplicity and immediate, tangible value proposition, eliminating a genuinely annoying and near-universal pain point in professional communication, helped it grow through strong word-of-mouth and organic adoption, particularly as individual professionals who adopted it for their own scheduling needs would then send links to colleagues, clients, and prospects who had never used the product themselves, creating a viral, bottoms-up growth loop common among productivity tools with this kind of built-in sharing mechanism. Calendly has expanded from its original individual scheduling link product into broader team and enterprise scheduling features, including round-robin meeting distribution across sales or support teams, integration with customer relationship management (CRM) systems to automatically log meeting activity, and workflow automation features that trigger actions like sending reminder emails or follow-up tasks around scheduled meetings. The company notably grew for years without raising significant outside venture capital, remaining largely bootstrapped under founder Tope Awotona's majority ownership before eventually raising a large growth equity round from Iconiq Capital and OpenView Venture Partners at a valuation exceeding $3 billion, a relatively unusual funding trajectory for a company of its scale and market prominence.
