Cambridge Mobile Telematics was founded in 2010 by Hari Balakrishnan and Sam Madden, MIT computer science professors who applied their research on smartphone sensing to the problem of measuring real-world driving behavior, such as hard braking, speeding, phone distraction while driving, and cornering, using only the sensors already built into a standard smartphone, such as its accelerometer, GPS, and gyroscope, rather than requiring drivers to install separate dedicated hardware devices in their vehicles, an approach that had been the more common method used by earlier usage-based insurance programs. The company's technology has been widely adopted by auto insurance companies, which use CMT's telematics data and risk-scoring algorithms to power usage-based insurance programs, sometimes marketed under names like "pay-how-you-drive" or "safe driving discount" programs, that let insurers price individual policies based on a driver's actual measured driving behavior rather than only traditional rating factors like age, location, and credit history, potentially offering safer drivers meaningfully lower premiums while helping insurers more accurately price risk. Beyond insurance risk scoring, CMT's technology has been used for broader road safety applications, including driver coaching and feedback programs that help individual drivers and commercial fleets identify and correct risky driving behaviors, and city and government safety initiatives that use aggregated, anonymized driving data to identify particularly dangerous road segments or intersections. The company has processed data from an enormous number of trips across a large base of participating drivers globally, giving it one of the largest driving behavior datasets in the industry, which it has argued improves the accuracy of its risk models over time as the dataset grows. Cambridge Mobile Telematics has raised substantial venture funding from investors including SoftBank Vision Fund and Guidewire, and has partnered with a large number of major auto insurance carriers globally.
