Capsule was founded in 2015 by Eric Kinariwala, based on his own frustrating personal experience trying to fill a prescription at a traditional retail pharmacy, and built around the idea that the pharmacy experience for most Americans, involving driving to a physical pharmacy counter, waiting in line, and often facing unclear pricing and limited communication about medication details, was overdue for a more modern, convenient, and transparent digital alternative. Capsule's core service lets patients have their doctor send a prescription electronically to Capsule, after which the company fills the prescription and delivers it directly to the patient's home, typically the same day, at no additional delivery cost, along with a mobile app that gives patients visibility into their prescription status, medication information, and refill scheduling. The company has positioned itself particularly around price transparency and patient support, working to surface the actual cost a patient will pay upfront, including navigating insurance coverage and identifying available discount or manufacturer copay assistance programs, rather than patients only discovering the price at the pharmacy counter after already waiting for their prescription to be filled, a common frustration with traditional pharmacy experiences. Capsule has focused its physical operations and same-day delivery capability primarily in New York City and a number of other major U.S. metropolitan areas where dense population and delivery infrastructure make same-day pharmacy delivery operationally feasible, differentiating its geographic strategy somewhat from digital pharmacy competitors pursuing broader national footprints. The company has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Alta Partners, Sequoia Capital, and Elad Gil, reaching a valuation in the billions of dollars, competing in the growing digital pharmacy category with other players including Alto Pharmacy, Amazon Pharmacy, and traditional retail pharmacy chains' own delivery and digital initiatives.
