Caris Life Sciences was founded in 2008 by David Halbert, building a laboratory and technology platform focused on comprehensive molecular and genomic profiling of cancer tumors, based on the growing recognition within oncology that cancers with the same traditional diagnosis, such as the same type and stage of lung cancer, can behave very differently and respond to very different treatments depending on the specific genetic mutations and molecular characteristics driving that particular patient's tumor, making detailed molecular testing increasingly central to modern cancer treatment decisions rather than relying solely on traditional pathology and staging. Caris's core service analyzes a patient's tumor tissue sample across multiple types of molecular testing, including DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, and protein expression analysis, generating a detailed molecular profile of the tumor that oncologists can use to identify which targeted therapies, immunotherapies, or clinical trials are most likely to be effective for that specific patient, an approach often referred to as precision oncology or molecular tumor profiling. The company has built one of the largest clinico-genomic databases in oncology by combining the molecular profiling data it generates with de-identified clinical outcomes data from the patients whose tumors it has tested, a dataset it has used both to continuously improve its own testing and interpretation algorithms and to support pharmaceutical industry partnerships around drug development and clinical trial design. Caris has expanded its testing menu over time to include liquid biopsy tests, which analyze tumor genetic material found circulating in a patient's blood rather than requiring a traditional tissue biopsy, useful in situations where obtaining tissue is difficult or when monitoring how a cancer is evolving over the course of treatment. The company has raised very substantial private funding, including from sovereign wealth funds and large institutional investors, reaching a valuation in the billions of dollars, and competes with other molecular profiling and precision oncology testing companies such as Foundation Medicine and Tempus.
