Cart.com was founded in 2020 by Omair Tariq, a former Amazon executive, based on the observation that mid-sized brands and retailers seeking to build a serious multi-channel e-commerce operation, selling across their own website, marketplaces like Amazon and Walmart, and other channels, faced a highly fragmented landscape of point solutions for different pieces of that puzzle, including e-commerce storefront software, order management, warehousing and fulfillment, advertising, and customer service, with no single vendor offering a genuinely integrated solution spanning the full operation. Cart.com's platform combines software for managing multi-channel online sales, inventory, and order operations with an actual physical fulfillment network of warehouses that the company operates to physically pick, pack, and ship orders on behalf of its customers, giving brands a combined software-and-logistics offering rather than requiring them to separately manage software vendors and third-party logistics providers. The company has grown significantly in part through an active acquisition strategy, purchasing a number of smaller e-commerce software, marketing, and logistics companies to expand and integrate its combined technology and fulfillment offering more quickly than organic development alone would have allowed. Cart.com's target customers span mid-sized direct-to-consumer brands and retailers that have outgrown simpler, single-channel e-commerce tools like a standalone Shopify store but are not large enough to justify building the kind of extensive proprietary logistics and multi-channel commerce infrastructure that the very largest retailers operate internally. The company has raised substantial venture funding from investors including General Catalyst, Oak HC/FT, and Union Square Ventures, reaching unicorn status, and it competes with other e-commerce enablement and fulfillment providers such as ShipBob and Deliverr (acquired by Shopify) in a market that has grown alongside the broader shift toward direct-to-consumer and multi-channel online retail.
