Cartesia AI was founded in 2024 by Albert Gu and Karan Goel, researchers who helped develop state-space model architectures such as Mamba, an alternative to the transformer architecture underlying most large language models, with the founders arguing that state-space models can offer significant advantages in computational efficiency and the ability to handle very long input sequences, properties that are particularly valuable for real-time, low-latency applications such as voice AI, where a model needs to process and respond to continuous audio streams quickly enough to support natural, responsive conversation rather than the multi-second delays common with some voice AI systems. The company has focused specifically on building fast, efficient voice AI models, including realistic text-to-speech (voice generation) and speech recognition capabilities, positioning its underlying state-space model architecture as particularly well-suited to voice applications given the sequential, continuous nature of audio data and the strict latency requirements of natural-feeling voice interactions, such as AI customer service agents, voice assistants, and other conversational AI products that need to respond in near real-time to feel natural rather than robotic or laggy. Cartesia has released developer-facing APIs for its voice models, competing for developers building voice AI applications with other text-to-speech and voice AI providers such as ElevenLabs, Deepgram, and the voice capabilities built into large multimodal models from major AI labs. The company's technical bet on state-space model architectures as an alternative or complement to the transformer architecture that has dominated the recent generative AI boom has drawn significant attention within the AI research community, given the founders' direct role in developing that underlying architecture. Cartesia has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Index Ventures, reaching a valuation in the hundreds of millions of dollars as a relatively young but closely watched company in the fast-growing AI voice technology category.
