Cedar was founded in 2016 by Florian Otto and Arel Lidow, based on the observation that the medical billing experience for patients in the U.S. healthcare system is often confusing, fragmented, and frustrating, with patients frequently receiving multiple separate paper bills from different providers involved in a single episode of care, unclear explanations of what insurance covered and what the patient actually owes, and limited digital or flexible payment options compared to virtually every other kind of consumer bill people are used to paying. This confusing billing experience contributes to both poor patient satisfaction and, from the healthcare provider's perspective, lower and slower collection rates on patient-owed balances, since confused or frustrated patients are less likely to pay promptly or in full. Cedar's platform sits on top of a hospital or health system's existing billing and revenue cycle systems, providing patients with a simplified, personalized digital billing experience that consolidates charges, clearly explains what insurance covered versus what the patient owes, and offers flexible payment options including payment plans and various digital payment methods, aiming to improve both patient satisfaction and the percentage of patient-owed balances that healthcare providers successfully collect. The company has expanded from its original patient billing product into broader patient financial engagement tools, including pre-visit registration and eligibility verification, financial assistance and charity care screening to help identify patients who may qualify for reduced or waived charges, and analytics helping health systems understand and improve their overall patient financial experience. Cedar's customers include a number of large health systems and hospital networks across the U.S., where improving patient collections and satisfaction has become an increasingly important priority as patients have taken on a larger share of healthcare costs through high-deductible insurance plans. The company has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Founders Fund, Thrive Capital, and Tiger Global, reaching unicorn status.
