Chargebee was founded in 2011 in Chennai, India by Krish Subramanian, Rajaraman Santhanam, Saravanan KP, and Thiyagarajan T, based on the observation that as more software businesses shifted from one-time software license sales to recurring subscription models, they needed specialized billing infrastructure to handle the complexity subscription billing introduces, including prorated charges when customers upgrade or downgrade mid-cycle, trial periods, usage-based billing components, and revenue recognition rules that differ meaningfully from simple one-time transaction billing, complexity that generic payment processors and traditional invoicing tools were not built to handle. Chargebee's platform automates the full subscription billing lifecycle, integrating with payment gateways to process recurring charges, managing subscription plan changes and associated proration logic, generating and sending invoices, handling failed payment recovery through automated retry logic and customer communication (sometimes called "dunning management"), and providing revenue recognition and reporting functionality relevant to accounting requirements for subscription businesses. The company has expanded from its original billing core into broader revenue operations functionality, including quote-to-cash workflows for sales-driven subscription businesses, and has built integrations with popular accounting, CRM, and payment processing tools commonly used alongside subscription billing. Chargebee's customer base spans a large number of software-as-a-service companies and other subscription-based businesses of varying sizes, from smaller startups to larger enterprise subscription businesses, and the company has positioned itself as more configurable and full-featured than some simpler subscription billing add-ons offered by payment processors, while being more specifically focused on subscription and recurring revenue businesses than broader enterprise billing systems. Chargebee has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Tiger Global, Insight Partners, and Sapphire Ventures, reaching unicorn status, competing with other subscription billing platforms such as Zuora and Recurly.
