CircleCI was founded in 2011 by Paul Biggar and Rob Curtis, entering the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) market early, at a time when automated software testing and deployment pipelines were becoming an increasingly standard practice among software engineering teams seeking to ship code changes more frequently and reliably than traditional, slower release cycles allowed. CircleCI's platform automates the process of building, testing, and deploying software whenever developers push new code changes, running automated test suites and other validation checks to catch bugs and issues before they reach production, and then, if configured to do so, automatically deploying validated code changes to production or staging environments without requiring manual intervention for each release. The company built its platform to integrate closely with popular code hosting and version control platforms such as GitHub and Bitbucket, letting engineering teams configure CI/CD pipelines directly alongside their existing code repositories, and has supported a wide range of programming languages, testing frameworks, and deployment targets to accommodate the diverse technology stacks used across different engineering organizations. CircleCI's customers span a very wide range of company sizes, from smaller startups running relatively simple CI/CD pipelines to large enterprise engineering organizations running complex, high-volume pipelines across many development teams and codebases, with the company offering both cloud-hosted and self-hosted deployment options to accommodate varying security, compliance, and infrastructure requirements. The company experienced a significant security incident in early 2023 involving unauthorized access to certain customer environment variables and secrets, prompting it to require customers to rotate credentials stored in its systems, an episode that underscored the sensitivity of the access CI/CD platforms typically have to customers' source code and deployment credentials. CircleCI has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Battery Ventures, Scale Venture Partners, and Owl Rock Capital, reaching unicorn status, competing with other CI/CD platforms including GitHub Actions, GitLab, and Jenkins.
