Clubhouse was founded in 2020 by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth, launching a novel social media format built entirely around live, audio-only conversation, letting users create and join virtual "rooms" where they could listen to or actively participate in live discussions on virtually any topic, ranging from casual conversation among friends to larger, more formal panel discussions featuring notable public figures, entrepreneurs, and celebrities. The app's invitation-only launch model and initial iOS-only availability, combined with a wave of high-profile early adopters including prominent tech industry figures, generated significant early buzz and a sense of exclusivity that drove rapid word-of-mouth growth during 2020 and into early 2021, a period when COVID-19 lockdowns had left many people craving new forms of social connection and live, spontaneous conversation felt like a genuinely novel alternative to text-based and pre-recorded social media content. Clubhouse reached a peak valuation of roughly $4 billion following a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz at the height of its popularity, but the app's growth trajectory reversed sharply once it expanded beyond its initial invite-only exclusivity and, more significantly, once major competing platforms including Twitter (with Twitter Spaces), Facebook, LinkedIn, and Spotify introduced their own live audio room features, giving users access to similar functionality within apps they already used regularly rather than requiring a dedicated separate app primarily useful for this one format. Clubhouse's usage declined substantially from its 2021 peak as the broader live audio format proved less durably differentiated than initially expected once incumbent social platforms replicated the core functionality, and the company underwent significant layoffs and strategic repositioning in the years that followed, illustrating a broader pattern common among viral, format-driven social apps that achieve explosive initial growth around a genuinely novel feature that established platforms can subsequently copy and distribute to their own much larger existing user bases.
