Coda was founded in 2014 by Shishir Mehrotra and Alex DeNeui, with Mehrotra drawing on prior experience as a YouTube executive observing how much internal company coordination and workflow still happened through a patchwork of disconnected documents, spreadsheets, and specialized software tools, none of which worked particularly well together, motivating an attempt to build a single, more flexible tool that could blend the free-form writing of a document, the structured data and calculation capabilities of a spreadsheet, and the interactivity of a lightweight software application, all within one unified canvas. Coda's product lets users build documents that incorporate structured data tables, similar to a spreadsheet or database, alongside free-form text, and add interactive elements such as buttons, forms, and automations that can trigger actions like updating data or sending notifications, effectively letting relatively non-technical users build lightweight internal tools and workflows without traditional software development. This flexible, building-block approach has made Coda popular for use cases such as team wikis, product roadmaps, meeting notes with embedded action item tracking, and various internal operational trackers that might otherwise require either a dedicated specialized software tool or an ad hoc combination of documents and spreadsheets that don't stay well synchronized with each other. The company operates in a productivity software category that has seen significant innovation and competition in recent years around similarly flexible, all-in-one workspace tools, most notably Notion, which has pursued a broadly similar vision of combining documents, structured data, and lightweight application-building into a unified, highly customizable workspace, along with Airtable, which approaches similar territory from a more database-first starting point. Coda has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Kholsa Ventures, Greylock Partners, and General Catalyst, reaching a valuation exceeding $1.4 billion, and has increasingly incorporated generative AI features to help users build documents, tables, and automations more quickly.
