Color was founded in 2013 by Elad Gil, Othman Laraki, and several genetics-focused scientists, initially building an affordable, physician-ordered genetic testing service that let individuals access clinical-grade genetic testing for hereditary cancer and cardiovascular disease risk at a substantially lower price point than testing had historically been available through traditional healthcare channels, aiming to make genetic risk information more broadly accessible beyond only patients who could afford expensive testing through traditional genetic counseling clinics. The company significantly expanded and pivoted its focus during the COVID-19 pandemic, building large-scale testing infrastructure and logistics capabilities that it deployed to help numerous U.S. states, counties, and other government entities stand up mass COVID-19 testing and later vaccination programs, leveraging both its existing genetic testing laboratory infrastructure and new operational capabilities built specifically to handle population-scale public health testing logistics. Following the most acute phase of the pandemic, Color has applied the population health infrastructure and public sector relationships it built during COVID-19 toward a broader mission of population-scale preventive health screening, including partnering with government health departments and health systems on cancer screening programs aimed at increasing early detection, particularly for underserved populations who may face barriers to accessing routine preventive care through traditional healthcare channels. The company has also continued to serve employers directly, offering genetic testing and broader preventive health screening as an employee benefit. Color has raised very substantial venture funding from investors including General Catalyst, Csaba Institute, and Trinity Ventures, reaching a valuation exceeding $4.5 billion at its pandemic-era peak, positioning itself at the intersection of genetic testing, population health infrastructure, and public health screening programs.
