Cortex was founded in 2020 by Anish Dhar and Ganesh Datta, drawing on their prior experience at Cisco Meraki observing how difficult it became for engineering organizations to maintain visibility and consistent standards across a rapidly growing number of independently owned microservices as the company scaled, a common challenge for engineering organizations that have adopted microservices architectures, where the benefits of independent, decentralized service ownership can come at the cost of inconsistent quality, security, and operational practices across the many different services and teams that make up a large, complex system. Cortex's platform provides a centralized "service catalog" that inventories all of an engineering organization's services, tracking metadata such as which team owns each service, its documentation status, on-call and incident response readiness, and adherence to internally defined engineering standards, such as whether a service has adequate test coverage, up-to-date dependencies, or proper monitoring and alerting configured. The company introduced "scorecards" that let engineering leadership define specific quality, security, and operational standards they want services to meet, then automatically track and surface which services and teams are meeting or falling short of those standards, creating both visibility for engineering leadership and a structured way for individual teams to understand and improve their own service health relative to organizational expectations. This kind of service catalog and scorecard approach has become increasingly relevant as engineering organizations have grown larger and more decentralized, since maintaining consistent quality, security, and operational maturity across potentially hundreds of independently developed and owned microservices is difficult to manage through informal processes or manual audits alone. Cortex's customers include a number of well-known technology companies with substantial engineering organizations managing complex microservices environments. The company has raised venture funding from investors including Redpoint Ventures and Tribe Capital, competing with other engineering intelligence and internal developer portal platforms including Backstage (an open-source project originated at Spotify) and OpsLevel.
