Course Hero was founded in 2006 by Andrew Grauer while he was a Cornell University student, building a platform where students could upload and share course-specific study materials, such as class notes, practice problems, and study guides, with other students, creating a large crowdsourced library of educational content organized by specific college courses and textbooks, an approach to educational content that differed from more centrally produced educational resources by leveraging the collective knowledge and materials that students themselves had already created for their own coursework. The company built a business model around giving contributors free or discounted access to the platform's broader content library in exchange for uploading their own course materials, alongside a paid subscription option for users who wanted access without contributing content themselves, a model that helped Course Hero build an enormous library of course-specific study content across a very large number of colleges, courses, and textbooks over time. The platform's academic integrity implications drew periodic scrutiny, since some educators raised concerns that certain uploaded materials, particularly practice problems or assignments that closely mirrored actual coursework, could potentially facilitate cheating if misused by students, prompting the company to invest in academic integrity policies, honor code partnerships with educational institutions, and tools to help identify and remove improperly shared proprietary course materials. Course Hero expanded well beyond its original study materials library into tutoring services, connecting students with subject-matter tutors for real-time help, and various other educational tools, eventually rebranding its parent corporate entity as Learneo to reflect a broader portfolio of educational technology products and acquisitions beyond the original Course Hero brand, including the acquisition of platforms like Symbolab, a math problem-solving tool, and QuillBot, a popular AI-powered writing and paraphrasing tool. The company has raised private funding at a valuation exceeding $3 billion, reflecting substantial investor interest in the broader online education and student support technology category.
