Dave was founded in 2016 by Jason Wilk, Paul Prageman, and John Wolanin, building a mobile banking app centered initially around a specific consumer pain point: traditional bank overdraft fees, which have historically generated billions of dollars in annual revenue for banks but disproportionately affect lower-income customers living paycheck to paycheck, sometimes triggering cascading fees that can push already financially stressed consumers further into difficulty. Dave's original core product, ExtraCash, gives users the ability to access a modest cash advance, typically a few hundred dollars, to cover expenses before their next paycheck arrives, positioned as a lower-cost alternative to both traditional bank overdraft fees and predatory payday loans, which often carry extremely high effective interest rates. Dave's business model has emphasized optional, transparent tipping and modest express-delivery fees for its cash advances rather than the mandatory, often confusing fee structures common among both traditional overdraft products and payday lenders, alongside a mobile banking account, budgeting tools that help users track spending and predict upcoming bills, and a "side hustle" job-matching feature connecting users with gig economy earning opportunities to help supplement their income. The company went public via a SPAC merger in January 2022, a period when several fintech companies pursuing this route to public markets subsequently faced significant stock price declines as investor sentiment toward unprofitable, high-growth fintech companies cooled considerably from the more speculative environment of 2021; Dave's stock likewise fell substantially from its debut before later recovering meaningfully as the company achieved profitability. Dave has continued to grow its user base and has emphasized reaching sustainable, profitable unit economics as a differentiator relative to some other consumer neobanks that have struggled to achieve profitability, competing in the broader consumer neobank and cash advance category with companies including Chime, Current, and other earned wage access and short-term liquidity products such as EarnIn.
