Figma was founded in 2012 by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace, building a browser-based design tool that let multiple designers collaborate on the same design file simultaneously in real time, similar to how Google Docs enabled real-time collaborative document editing, a capability that was notably absent from the desktop-based design software that had previously dominated the digital product design industry and that had made real-time, simultaneous multi-person collaboration on a single design file technically difficult or impossible. Figma's real-time collaborative architecture proved to have significantly stronger product-market fit than competing design tools, and the company grew to become the dominant tool used by product design teams at technology companies of virtually every size, effectively displacing previously popular design tools including Sketch and Adobe's own design products for much of the collaborative product design workflow. Adobe attempted to acquire Figma for approximately $20 billion in 2022, a deal that would have represented one of the largest software acquisitions in history, but the transaction was ultimately abandoned in 2023 after facing significant antitrust scrutiny from regulators in both the UK and European Union concerned about consolidating two major design software competitors under one company. Following the collapsed Adobe deal, Figma proceeded to complete its own initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 2025, and has continued expanding its product suite beyond core design into adjacent areas including whiteboarding, prototyping, and increasingly AI-assisted design generation features. Figma had raised substantial private venture funding from investors including Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz prior to its public listing.
