1Password was founded in 2005 by Dave Teare, Roustem Karimov, and Sara Teare, building consumer and business password management software well before password managers became a mainstream security recommendation, letting users generate, store, and automatically fill strong, unique passwords across websites and apps rather than reusing weak, memorable passwords across many accounts, a practice widely recognized as one of the most common and preventable causes of account compromise. The company has expanded significantly beyond consumer password management into a broader enterprise security platform, including tools for managing employee access to company applications, securing developer secrets and credentials used in software infrastructure, and providing visibility into "shadow IT," meaning unauthorized or unmanaged applications employees may be using without formal company approval. 1Password has notably remained independent and has not needed to compete primarily on price against free password managers built into browsers and operating systems, instead emphasizing security architecture, including its "Secret Key" design that adds an additional layer of protection beyond a master password alone. The company has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Accel and Iconiq Growth, reaching a valuation exceeding $6.8 billion, and competes with other password and identity security vendors including Bitwarden, Dashlane, and increasingly, broader identity and access management platforms extending into credential security.
