Abnormal Security was founded in 2018 by CEO Evan Reiser and Sanjay Jeyakumar to address a gap in traditional email security: attacks like business email compromise, executive impersonation, and vendor fraud that rely on convincingly human-sounding messages rather than obvious malware or malicious links, and so slip past conventional filters. Abnormal's cloud-native platform connects via API to email and collaboration tools and builds a behavioral baseline for every employee and vendor in an organization, drawing on communication patterns, sign-in behavior, and thousands of other signals, then flags deviations from that baseline that indicate a likely attack. The company has grown quickly in a crowded email-security market that includes Proofpoint, Mimecast, and Barracuda, as well as larger platform players like Microsoft. Abnormal reports that its product is used by more than 2,400 organizations, representing about 17% of the Fortune 500, including companies like Maersk, Xerox, and Mattel, and that it reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue in about four years, a rapid path to that milestone among cybersecurity companies. In August 2024, Abnormal raised a $250 million Series D round led by Wellington Management, with participation from existing investors Greylock Partners, Menlo Ventures, Insight Partners, and CrowdStrike's venture arm, valuing the company at $5.1 billion and bringing its total funding to roughly $546 million. The company has expanded its behavioral-AI approach beyond inbound email into account takeover detection and broader posture management across collaboration applications.
