ABL Space Systems was founded to build low-cost, flexible orbital launch capability for the growing small-satellite market, using CNC machining and 3D printing to manufacture its hardware domestically. Its flagship product, the RS1 rocket, is an 88-foot, two-stage vehicle powered by ABL's own E2 kerosene/liquid-oxygen engines, designed to loft roughly 1,350 kilograms to low Earth orbit at a target price point around $12 million per launch, positioning it between Rocket Lab's smaller Electron and SpaceX's larger Falcon 9. The company's other core product is GS0, a ground-support system that ships in standard containers by truck, letting ABL set up a launch site from deployable ground-support infrastructure at suitable launch sites. ABL's first RS1 launch attempt, from Kodiak Island, Alaska in January 2023, failed roughly ten seconds after liftoff when a fire in the engine compartment shut down all nine first-stage engines. The company spent much of 2023 investigating the failure and upgrading both RS1 and GS0, but its second RS1 vehicle was destroyed during a pre-launch static-fire test in July 2024 after a pad fire caused irrecoverable damage. Despite these setbacks, ABL has continued to win government business, including a $60 million contract under the U.S. Space Force and Air Force's STRATFI program to build rapid-response launch capability for defense customers, and it has signed multi-launch agreements with commercial customers such as Amazon's Kuiper satellite broadband constellation.
