Bird Rides was founded in 2017 by Travis VanderZanden, a former Uber and Lyft executive, and grew rapidly in its early years, becoming one of the fastest companies ever to reach unicorn status as it rapidly deployed fleets of dockless, shared electric scooters across cities around the world, popularizing a new category of short-distance "micromobility" transportation that positioned itself as a convenient, environmentally friendlier alternative to cars for short urban trips. The company's rapid international expansion, often ahead of formal agreements with city governments, generated significant regulatory friction in many markets, as cities grappled with sidewalk clutter, safety concerns, and questions about how to regulate a genuinely new mode of shared transportation. Bird went public via a SPAC merger in November 2021 at a peak valuation of roughly $2.5 billion, but the company's financial struggles deepened significantly afterward: in 2022 Bird disclosed that it had overstated revenue for more than two years by improperly recognizing revenue from unpaid customer rides, and the company conducted significant layoffs as it struggled to achieve sustainable unit economics amid intensifying competition from rivals like Lime and Spin, which Bird itself acquired in September 2023 shortly before its own troubles came to a head. Delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in September 2023 after its stock price and market capitalization fell below listing requirements, Bird filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2023, using the process to restructure its debt and sell its assets. The company emerged from bankruptcy in early 2024 under a new private parent company called Third Lane Mobility, continuing to operate both the Bird and Spin brands with a smaller footprint, a strengthened balance sheet, and, according to the company, a renewed focus on regulator-friendly operations and sustainable profitability rather than the rapid, sometimes contentious international expansion that characterized its earlier years.
