Bowery Farming was founded in 2015 by Irving Fain, based on the premise that traditional field agriculture for perishable produce like leafy greens involves long supply chains from farm to store that reduce freshness, increase food waste, and depend on unpredictable weather and water availability, problems that indoor vertical farming, growing crops in stacked layers inside climate-controlled indoor facilities using LED lighting instead of sunlight, could address by locating farms much closer to the end consumers in major metropolitan areas and precisely controlling growing conditions year-round regardless of outdoor weather. The company built proprietary growing technology, including its "BoweryOS" software platform that uses sensors, cameras, and machine learning to continuously monitor plant health and optimize growing conditions such as light, water, and nutrients for each crop, aiming to improve consistency and yield relative to both traditional field farming and earlier-generation indoor farming approaches. Bowery has grown greens and herbs including lettuce, kale, and basil, selling primarily through major grocery retail partnerships, positioning its products as fresher, longer-lasting, and grown without pesticides or the water and land use associated with traditional agriculture, at price points generally at a premium to conventionally grown produce. The broader indoor vertical farming industry, including competitors like AeroFarms and Plenty, has faced significant challenges in achieving the unit economics needed to compete with the very low costs of traditional large-scale outdoor agriculture, given the substantial capital expenditure and ongoing energy costs required to operate indoor growing facilities at scale. Bowery raised very substantial venture funding from investors including Google Ventures, Temasek, and General Catalyst, reaching a valuation in the billions of dollars at its peak, before the vertical farming sector broadly experienced significant financial strain and consolidation as several prominent players faced funding challenges and operational restructuring.
