Cerebras Systems was founded in 2015 by Andrew Feldman, Gary Lauterbach, and several other co-founders with prior chip design experience, pursuing a radically different approach to AI chip design than the industry-standard practice of manufacturing many separate, smaller chips: Cerebras instead builds its Wafer Scale Engine, a single enormous chip built from an entire silicon wafer, dramatically larger than any conventional processor and containing far more transistors and on-chip memory than would be possible using standard smaller chip designs, an approach intended to reduce the data movement bottlenecks that occur when AI computations must be split across many separate, smaller chips connected together. Cerebras has positioned its wafer-scale technology as offering particular advantages for both training very large AI models and, increasingly, for AI inference, where the company has emphasized dramatically faster response generation speeds compared to conventional GPU-based infrastructure for certain workloads, a differentiator that has attracted customers seeking faster real-time AI application performance. The company pursued and completed an initial public offering in 2026, marking its transition from a private venture-backed company to a publicly traded one, following prior attempts at a public listing that had been delayed amid national security review processes related to a significant investor based in the United Arab Emirates. Cerebras had raised substantial private venture funding from investors including Altimeter Capital and Benchmark prior to its public listing, and competes with Nvidia's dominant GPU-based AI computing platforms, alongside other specialized AI chip companies including Groq and SambaNova.
