Firefly Aerospace was founded in 2014 (under earlier names before reorganizing), building both an orbital launch vehicle business and, more distinctively among space startups, a lunar lander program aimed at delivering payloads to the Moon's surface on behalf of NASA and other customers. The company's Alpha rocket is a small-satellite launch vehicle designed to carry payloads to low Earth orbit, competing in the increasingly crowded small launch vehicle market that includes companies such as Rocket Lab and ABL Space Systems, all targeting the growing market for dedicated, relatively low-cost launches of smaller satellites that don't require the capacity of a much larger vehicle like SpaceX's Falcon 9. Firefly's most significant achievement to date has been its Blue Ghost lunar lander program, developed under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, which contracts with private companies to deliver NASA science and technology payloads to the lunar surface as part of the broader Artemis program's preparation for eventual crewed lunar missions. In March 2025, Firefly's Blue Ghost Mission 1 successfully landed on the Moon, becoming one of the first fully successful commercial lunar landings in history and a significant validation of Firefly's spacecraft engineering capability, notably achieving a fully upright, functional landing at a time when several other commercial lunar lander attempts by other companies had experienced partial failures or landed in compromised positions. Firefly has continued to develop additional lunar lander missions under its NASA contracts alongside its orbital launch business, positioning the company across two of the most closely watched categories in the renewed commercial space industry: dedicated small-satellite launch and commercial lunar delivery services. The company went public via an initial public offering in 2025, and has raised substantial private funding over its history from investors including AE Industrial Partners and Northrop Grumman, which has also served as a strategic partner and customer.
