Astera Labs was founded in 2017 by Jitendra Mohan, Sanjay Grover, and Casey Morrison, engineers with backgrounds in networking and semiconductor design, based on the recognition that as AI training and inference workloads pushed data centers toward using far more GPUs, accelerators, and specialized memory working together at very high speeds, the interconnect technology linking these components together, rather than the processors themselves, was becoming an increasingly important bottleneck and differentiator for overall system performance. Astera Labs designs semiconductor chips and software implementing high-speed interconnect standards such as PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) and CXL (Compute Express Link), which allow processors, accelerators, memory, and storage devices within a server or across a rack of servers to communicate with the low latency and high bandwidth that modern AI workloads demand. The company's products are typically sold to large cloud service providers, server manufacturers, and other data center infrastructure companies building out AI training and inference clusters, where Astera's chips serve as a kind of connective tissue enabling different components, often sourced from different vendors such as Nvidia GPUs and various memory suppliers, to work together efficiently at scale. Astera Labs has benefited significantly from the broader AI infrastructure buildout since the emergence of large language models drove enormous new data center capital expenditure by major cloud providers and AI labs. The company went public on the Nasdaq stock exchange in March 2024, one of the more prominent semiconductor IPOs of that period, and has continued to expand its product portfolio to address emerging interconnect standards as data center architectures evolve to support ever-larger AI training clusters. Astera Labs competes with other data center connectivity and semiconductor companies, including divisions of larger chip makers such as Broadcom and Marvell that also address the high-speed interconnect market.
