Base Power was founded in 2023 by Justin Lopas and Zach Dell, entering the home battery storage market in Texas with a distinctive business model: rather than selling batteries to homeowners as a one-time hardware purchase the way solar and battery installers traditionally have, Base Power owns and operates the batteries itself, installing them at customers' homes at no upfront cost in exchange for a flat monthly subscription fee, similar to how a utility or subscription service is billed, while retaining the ability to aggregate and dispatch all of its installed batteries together as a coordinated "virtual power plant" that can provide grid services and backup capacity at scale. This model lets Base Power monetize its battery fleet in multiple ways simultaneously: providing home battery backup power for customers during grid outages, a particularly salient benefit in Texas given the state's history of major grid failures during extreme weather events; participating in the electricity market by discharging stored power back to the grid during periods of high demand and high prices; and providing grid stability and frequency regulation services that grid operators pay for. Because Base Power owns the underlying batteries rather than the homeowner, it can make real-time decisions about when to charge, discharge, or hold energy in reserve based on grid conditions and pricing signals, rather than a homeowner-owned battery that typically operates based only on that individual home's preferences. The company launched initially in the Texas market, capitalizing on the state's deregulated electricity market structure and its particular vulnerability to grid instability during heat waves and winter storms. Base Power has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Terrain, positioning itself within a growing category of distributed energy resource and virtual power plant companies aiming to make residential batteries part of broader grid infrastructure rather than standalone home appliances.
