Bosonic was founded to address a specific structural risk in institutional cryptocurrency trading: unlike traditional securities markets, where trades are typically settled through regulated central clearinghouses that reduce counterparty risk, much of institutional crypto trading has historically required firms to pre-fund and hold assets directly on individual exchanges in order to trade, exposing institutional traders to the risk that an exchange could become insolvent or otherwise fail to return their assets, a risk category that became painfully salient following the collapse of FTX and other exchange failures in 2022. Bosonic's platform aims to let institutional trading firms, market makers, and exchanges settle trades between each other more like traditional capital markets, without each counterparty needing to fully pre-fund and hold balances on every exchange or trading venue they interact with, instead using a network-based settlement approach designed to reduce the amount of capital that must sit exposed to any single counterparty's balance sheet at any given time. This kind of settlement infrastructure has become increasingly important to institutional adoption of crypto trading, since large asset managers, hedge funds, and banks have generally required much stronger counterparty risk protections than were historically available in crypto markets before committing significant capital to digital asset trading strategies. Bosonic has positioned its technology as addressing a key structural gap that has held back deeper institutional participation in crypto markets, working with exchanges, prime brokers, and institutional trading firms to integrate its settlement network into their existing trading workflows. The company operates in a category of institutional crypto market infrastructure that has grown alongside increasing regulatory clarity and institutional interest in digital assets, competing with other approaches to reducing counterparty and settlement risk in crypto markets, including qualified custodian-based trading models and other emerging settlement networks.
