Cyera was founded in 2021 by Yotam Segev and Tamar Bar-Ilan, Israeli cybersecurity veterans, entering the data security market at a time when enterprises' data footprints had become increasingly distributed across multiple cloud providers, software-as-a-service applications, and data stores, making it genuinely difficult for security teams to maintain an accurate, continuously updated understanding of where sensitive data actually lives, who has access to it, and whether that access and storage complies with internal policy and external regulation, a category of technology often referred to as data security posture management (DSPM). Cyera's platform automatically discovers and classifies an organization's data across its cloud and on-premises environments, identifying sensitive data types such as personal information, financial data, health records, or intellectual property, and mapping the access permissions and data flows associated with that sensitive data, giving security teams visibility into risks such as sensitive data that is overly broadly accessible, stored in non-compliant locations, or exposed to unnecessary third-party access. The company has positioned its platform as addressing a foundational gap that many security programs have struggled with, arguing that a large share of security incidents and compliance failures ultimately trace back to organizations simply not knowing precisely what sensitive data they hold and where it resides, a problem that has become more acute as cloud adoption and data proliferation have accelerated far faster than most organizations' data governance and security practices have kept pace. Cyera has grown extremely quickly since its founding, raising a series of large venture funding rounds in rapid succession from investors including Sequoia Capital, Accel, and Coatue, reaching a valuation exceeding $6 billion within just a few years of its founding, reflecting intense investor interest in data security posture management as both a growing compliance necessity and a foundational capability increasingly relevant to AI governance, competing with other data security vendors including BigID and Varonis.
