Augment Principles

These principles are our operating system. They guide how we build, hire, and make decisions when the answer isn't obvious. We hold ourselves and each other to these standards. They reflect both who we are today and who we aspire to become. They define what it means to be an Augmenter.

Strive to delight

We are product people at heart. Delightful design and smooth user experience are our differentiators. We take pride in our work and obsess over quality and getting the details right.

We only ship work that is lovable and complete.

We hold a high bar and are internally critical of our product. Bugs happen and we fix them quickly.

We make every external touchpoint feel thoughtful and intentional.

Taste matters… in our product, customer communication, marketing assets, and even legal documents. We believe beauty is a virtue.

Trust is currency

We are in it for the long term and trust is a compounding asset. It takes years to build and only moments to lose. We pursue truth with our customers, partners, and teammates.

We treat our customers with respect and honesty, in good times or bad.

We communicate clearly and make ourselves available to them. Little things go a long way.

We hold the line on integrity.

Offense is important but defense is what keeps us in the game. We surface risks and concerns early. If something feels off, we say so.

We do what we say we'll do.

We honor our commitments and execute reliably. If we're not fully bought in, we don't commit in the first place. Plans can change when context changes but promises should be revised explicitly and not forgotten.

Health is our foundation

We are all humans. Our health is the foundation on top of which we build great things: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. We take care of ourselves individually so we can show up as our best selves.

We are kind.

We challenge ideas, not people. We are open to changing our minds… "strong opinions, loosely held". We debate upfront, decide, and commit as one team, even in disagreement. We trust our teammates with the freedom to execute. We pause to celebrate wins and dissect losses without blame.

We share responsibility for designing sustainable systems.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Short-term heroics have their place but recurring fire drills and non-stop decision-making drain mental energy. We insist on clear interfaces to reduce noise and allow us to focus on our superpowers.

No bullshit. No drama.

Simplicity is sophistication

The universe drifts toward entropy and left unchecked, complexity compounds. We thrive in uncertainty but don't stay in it. We expend tremendous amounts of energy to keep our products and processes clean. Simplicity is earned.

We don't chase every shiny object and we don't invest in every single feature.

Doing one critical thing extremely well is better than doing 10 things half-assed. Time and attention are our most limited resources, and saying no is often more valuable than saying yes. We put energy into what moves the needle and cut the rest.

We are lean, resourceful, and scrappy.

We don't wait for more headcount or more budget. Constraints sharpen execution and in many cases, less is more. We hack solutions together and experiment ourselves before scaling. The larger the project, the more we plan deliberately.

In steady state, we close loops at the same rate we open them.

We finish or consciously abandon jobs before moving on to the next one. We don't carry dead weight.

Play to win

We're here to build something big, enjoy the game, and make money on the way. We love to win and are not here just to collect a paycheck.

We bias to action.

Talk is cheap but velocity is a competitive advantage. We avoid analysis paralysis because a good decision today beats a perfect decision tomorrow. If something feels 80% right, go for it. Movement and iteration surface information to illuminate the path forward. We have the agency to individually make the first move, to fix a problem or pursue an idea. Momentum compounds.

We take smart swings.

We have the courage to take big shots with asymmetric upside while managing risk so the company can keep swinging. We learn from both wins and setbacks by recycling what works and discarding what doesn't.

We enjoy the journey.

We get to build the future and don't take that for granted.

Steward the company

We make decisions in the long-term interest of Augment as a whole. Do the right thing. We favor decisions that strengthen the company and can scale for the long term, avoiding exceptions that may create unintended precedent.

Our principles have natural tension.

This principle is the tie-breaker.
